Honor Students On The Inside: How Community Colleges Are Educating Incarcerated Students

James Elliott did his time. Arrested at 19 for a home invasion, he spent more than five years in the Delaware correctional system. While inside he took classes through Ohio University, eventually earning 18 transferable credits. Upon his release from a halfway house in 2016, he enrolled at Delaware Technical Community College and quickly demonstrated that he was an excellent student. He earned good grades and took accelerated classes that led to membership in Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the community college honors society. By the end of his community college career, he was serving as the international president of PTK and spreading the word about the importance of providing educational opportunities to the more than 1.5 million men and women incarcerated in the United States.
