Fostering human-centered outcomes.

Transformative Education Collective is a collaboration with different business entities, talented individuals, and community based organizations. BaseCamp Farms and Summit Retreat is a regenerative and integrated nature-based farm, learning center, and retreat location dedicated to helping people reconnect—with themselves, with one another, and with the natural world. Through immersive, grounded experiences in the outdoors, we create spaces that are nourishing, supportive, and restorative in a world that often moves too fast.

Rooted in the Southern California mountains of Tehachapi at 6,000 feet elevation—less than two hours from Los Angeles—our space offers both accessibility and a quiet sense of distance from everyday noise. We serve local communities across the region while also welcoming those from the city seeking rest, reflection, and reconnection.

Our work is guided by the belief that meaningful transformation happens through presence—time in nature, shared experience, and the simple act of slowing down together.

How it began.

Alec Griffin PhD and Peter Fulks PhD

Transformative Education Collective founders, Alec and Peter, met in 2017 while teaching as pioneer faculty in their fledgling prison education program, and quickly melded minds, at a pub no less, over the aspects of their lived experiences, education, and fields of study that have intertwined and transformational impacts on their personal wellbeing and teaching practices. The root of the issue, they found, was their students' extreme assets in life and the classroom, instead of the deficit model of a traditional approach to education. The asset model helped them understand their own value and agency in a leviathan system of incarceration, education, policy, and humans.

It started at the pub, but the conversation led into the classroom, with the students challenging Alec and Peter to go deeper in their fields and understandings, and they formulated a framework and solidarity that carried into life, doctoral work, publications, and serving students. Since then, the fundamental building blocks of a refined approach to professional development, human development, relational learning, and doing better for humanity has bonded them.

The nonprofit.

Transformative Education Collective is the umbrella for our work in nature-based learning and experiential education, while all workshops, retreats, and Forest School programs are offered through our nonprofit, California Praxis Institute (CPI), which carries out our mission of hands-on, place-based education and transformative learning in practice
